The Collector

LIFE IS SHORT, DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY

What I love about Betsy Alexander is that she is so unappologetically in love with the art she has been collecting since she was 9 years old. Most people don't have an interest in collecting ray guns or wind-up robots, but to her they are so much more than that.

It was obvious, even in the few hours I was there, that the art in her home brings her so much joy. These pieces spark her imagination, and bring back memories of the artists she bought them from.

LOVE YOUR GARBAGE

Author Austin Kleon writes about having the guts to love the things you enjoy. "We all love things that other people think are garbage. You have to have the courage to keep loving your garbage, because what makes us unique is the diversity and breadth of our influences," he says in his book Show Your Work! "When you find things you genuinely enjoy, don't let anyone else make you feel bad about it. Celebrate them."

I've never seen such a stark example as Betsy's collection, and that to me is just so beautiful.
